German software company SAP to spend €20bn on European sovereign cloud over next decade

SAP plans to spend more than €20 billion over the next ten years to improve its “sovereign cloud” services in Europe.

The plan includes a new platform called Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) that lets companies run SAP cloud services entirely in SAP’s EU data centers.
They will also launch an option that lets companies host SAP-run cloud systems inside their own data centers.
There’s a special cloud called Delos Cloud for Germany’s public sector to meet local rules.

This move is meant to help keep customer data safe inside Europe and follow EU laws like GDPR.
SAP leaders say that being innovative and keeping data under local control must go together.

SAP already works with other big cloud providers like AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, and Alibaba—but this new plan is more about giving European companies more control, especially in areas like government or regulated industries.

The goal is to make sure Europe has strong, local options for data storage and computing, so people don’t have to rely on cloud services from outside the region.

SAP also works with Deutsche Telekom, Ionos, and Schwarz to build an AI data center in Europe with help from the EU.

This investment could shape the future of how Europe keeps and uses its data.

AWS Asia Pacific (New Zealand) Region

AWS has just opened its own cloud region in New Zealand, called the Asia Pacific (New Zealand) Region, with three separate zones for reliability and low lag time.

They are investing NZ$7.5 billion to build it. It’s a big deal for the country—expected to add NZ$10.8 billion to New Zealand’s economy and to support 1,000 jobs every year.

This region lets local people and businesses run jobs and store data inside New Zealand, making things faster and keeping data safe at home.

AWS has been growing its presence for years—introducing subsea cables in 2016, content delivery points in 2020, plus a Local Zone and Direct Connect in 2023. Now they add this full region in Auckland.

They also commit to sustainability. From the start, the region runs on clean energy, thanks to a long-term deal with Mercury NZ and a wind farm project.

AWS will support training and skills programs too. They aim to train 100,000 people in cloud skills and have already helped more than 50,000.

This region opens the door for New Zealand groups—from startups to banks to government—to use AWS’s tools like AI and data services locally.

Microsoft 365 data residency offerings now available in Austria

Microsoft now offers local data control for its 365 services in Austria.

They added two tools:
The first, called Advanced Data Residency (ADR), lets Austria-based customers keep key data—like emails, files, Teams chat, and Copilot—in Austrian servers.

The second, called multi-Geo, lets organizations choose where each user’s data is kept, even under one overall account.

This matters because it helps companies in Austria keep data close to home, follow local rules, and work better for users.

It is part of Microsoft’s wider work to roll out similar features in many places like Mexico, Spain, Taiwan, New Zealand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Chile over the past year.

FairPrice Group Deepens AI Collaboration with Google Cloud

FairPrice Group, Singapore’s biggest retailer, is using AI tools with Google Cloud to make shopping easier and staff work smarter.

They are using voice-aware “smart carts” that shoppers can talk to. These carts can help suggest what to buy, share recipes, and check if products are in stock.

There is a “wellness assistant” at the pharmacy that gives health suggestions and recipes based on body scans. There is also a “wine helper” where a shopper taps their phone on shelf labels and gets wine ideas with notes and food pairings

The team behind the scenes, like marketing, now use AI to build ads really fast. One helper has cut time needed by ten times and costs by one hundred times.

Now, staff can also make helpers of their own with a no-code platform called Agentspace. It keeps things safe and compliant.

FairPrice wants all this to make shopping better for people and make store work smoother. The effort began at the Punggol Digital District store and will reach more places in the coming months.

These tools are not just neat ways to shop. They are a fresh way to run a store, step by step.
